Acknowledging the Reality: Let’s be completely fair from the outset: police officers and neighbourhood teams are stretched thin, under-resourced, and doing a genuinely difficult job in very challenging circumstances. They face immense daily pressures, and that hard work deserves to be recognised.
The Missing Questions: However, acknowledging that difficulty does not mean accepting inaction. For too long, no one has been asking the right, rigorous questions about anti-social behaviour in our town centre, nor have credible solutions been put forward to tackle systemic problems like the unchecked use of illegal private e-scooters around school gates and pedestrian zones.
Holding Authorities to Account: My role is to bridge that gap. Through my new dossier-style Bridgwater Central Accountability Tracker, I am driving my own "Show Your Working" Campaign to hold local policing to a higher standard of transparency. I'm not just complaining—I'm reviewing the correspondence, tracking police positions, and demanding real answers from Avon and Somerset Police.
Next Steps on Town Centre Safety: The work doesn't stop with e-scooters. While I continue pushing for local enforcement data and autumn operations, more questions are already heading down the pipeline regarding the handling of persistent street drinking and anti-social behaviour affecting our public spaces.
Make Your Voice Heard: If you want to see scrutiny replace vague assurances, head over to ‘Avon and Somerset Constabulary: Show Your Working’ to get total access to the tracker (updated weekly) , get the set of infographics to share on social media and be part of the growing numbers of people in Bridgwater who have said that enough is enough!
