The Magic of Bridgwater Carnival: Celebrating the Incredible Dedication of Our Carnival Gangs

  • The Greatest Show in the South West: There is honestly nothing quite like Bridgwater Carnival anywhere else in the world. From the roar of the massive, illuminated carts rolling down the dark streets to the brilliant atmosphere shared by thousands, it’s a masterclass in local passion. It brings generations together, reminds us of our unique history, and puts our town firmly on the map.

  • The Graft Behind the Glamour: When we stand out there watching the procession glide past, it’s easy to forget the sheer scale of effort involved. The truth is, the magic of carnival doesn't happen by accident. Hundreds of volunteers, local families, and dedicated carnival club members spend months—if not the entire year—welding, wiring, painting, and sewing away in damp sheds. That relentless community spirit and commitment is the true heartbeat of Bridgwater. As an aside, I would have loved to have been involved in it all when I was younger, but other commitments always got in the way—so I am firmly a spectator cheering from the sidelines!

  • Thanking Our Carnival Gangs: We owe a massive debt of gratitude to every single carnival gang, marshaller, and organiser. They give up their free time, pour their own resources into their entries, and keep our historic traditions alive through sheer hard graft. They are the ones who give our town something truly extraordinary to rally behind.

  • Catching Up at The Inn: Carnival night isn't just about entertainment; it's about solidarity, local pride, and supporting the charities that benefit from the collections every single year. If you're heading out to soak in the atmosphere, I’ll be posted up at The Carnival Inn—make sure to pop by for a pint and a catch-up. Let’s wrap up warm, look out for one another, and give our gangs the loudest cheer possible as they roll past.

  • Further information on the carnival is on the official website.

The squibbing is a particular highlight of mine!
