Working Men’s Clubs were the beating heart of our communities and are in serious decline. Not the actual one I visited! Just an example!
The Big Money Takeover: When you see massive political movements pulling in millions from crypto billionaires over a single weekend, you have to ask yourself who these parties are really working for. They aren't grassroots local voices; they're well-funded operations ready to double down on division.
A Pint and a Paradox: I spent time down at a local working men’s club this week—historically the absolute heart of the labour movement—and the mood was staggering. People told me the country is completely finished, yet when pressed, they couldn’t name a single thing the government had actually done wrong, other than agreeing that past austerity gutted our police force. Even stranger, they hated Labour so much they were pining for Margaret Thatcher to rise from the dead, while throwing support behind Reform or Restore without being able to name a single policy or fix they actually offer.
Ignoring the Evidence in Front of Us: We're seeing the exact same thing play out nationally—callers on phone-ins foaming at the mouth against political parties, only to go dead silent when basic facts get introduced, like stronger economic growth figures this week or a significant drop in small boat crossings.
Visualising the Difference: Imagine a local political debate where people demand real, structural answers instead of falling for slick campaign grifts funded by overseas tech money. We need a wake-up call in Bridgwater to look past the slogans, check the actual data, and demand practical solutions for our streets rather than just handing power over to people who profit from our frustration.
Paws on the Ground: I write this to highlight local and national issues but trying to be solutions-focused. It is easier to moan about what is wrong with our communities and yes not everything can be solved at once or at a local level but we can at least try! I am also showing that local people do have a voice and do often have great ideas on how to bring them about. I want to use this platform to showcase this and demonstrate that politics has certainly taken a hammering in recent decades but it is never too late to get involved!
Some people wanted her to be resurrected!
