Why isn't this going out to the local villages as well? As we've seen with past service shifts, because this is funded and provided by Bridgwater Town Council, its remit stops strictly at the town boundary—whereas other parish councils in neighbouring villages have chosen not to step up or fund these extra layers, leaving our town to do things differently.
What about areas like Hamp where it’s really needed? Resident reactions on social media highlight real friction points across our neighbourhoods, from ensuring high-priority estates like Hamp receive dedicated focus to tackling wider concerns around youth anti-social behaviour. Who knows? Perhaps they did go to Hamp!
Where were these workers when trouble flared up at the Docks? When serious incidents happen, like reports of large groups clashing down by the Docks, residents naturally ask where the support was—making the visible presence of detached youth workers all the more critical for engaging kids right on the ground. I don’t think we can expect detached youth workers to be the silver bullet we all want but it is a start! Remember, my recent posts on police failures point out the excuse culture in our area when compared to other forces doing well? Tactical Contact is a good post to read if you are interested as is Bridgwater Deserves Better: No more excuses for Town Centre Chaos. Whilst the police are supposed to be reactive, the Youth Workers are meant to be proactive. At least the Town Council has the vision to put in what is needed especially when the reactive response from the police is so woeful!
What could devolution mean for the future of our young people? Looking at broader regional shifts and the push for stronger devolution—similar to the coordinated regional strategies championed by figures like Andy Burnham—raises an interesting question. If real decision-making powers and funding are finally handed down from Whitehall to our region, could we see properly integrated youth services, stable long-term funding for grassroots projects, and a system where local towns aren't left entirely on their own to pick up the pieces?
