Bridgwater Fair- Excitement is building!

Exciting times ahead!

  • From Economic Blueprints to Fairground Lights: As we looked at ways to keep our community connected and resilient in Co-ops, Community Wealth, and Saving the High Street, it's easy to get bogged down in serious local policy discussions—making the unstoppable arrival of the Bridgwater Fair a brilliant seasonal reminder of the town’s living history.

  • Centuries of Tradition: Dating all the way back to a 13th-century royal charter, the fair remains one of the largest and most anticipated street and field fairs in the South West, drawing crowds from across Somerset for four packed days.

  • Rescued from the Chopping Block: What many people forget amidst the flashing lights and candy floss is that the smooth running and massive clean-up operation required for the fair nearly became a casualty of local government cuts. When Somerset Council proposed stepping back from funding and managing local services two years ago, it was Bridgwater Town Council that stepped up to absorb the responsibilities, ensuring this vital piece of our heritage didn't quietly vanish.

  • The Noise and the Nostalgia: From the heart-pounding rollercoasters and traditional side stalls to the legendary scent of hot food filling the autumn air, everyone has a memory tied to the event. That said, Flash won't be anywhere near the grounds; he absolutely hates the booming bass and screeching rides, though he would undoubtedly demand a royal welcome and all the fuss if anyone dared bring the fair stalls to him.

  • Plan Your Visit: Make sure you're ready for the crowds and local travel diversions; you can check out the schedule, details, and safety notices via the Bridgwater Town Council community events page.

One of my personal favourites!
